Since 1987, the Voluntary Organization for Social Development (VOSD) has been dedicated to transforming the lives of marginalized communities across Bangladesh. With a footprint in over 35 districts, spanning 137 Upazilas and reaching more than 10,500 villages, our community-led initiatives focus on empowering vulnerable populations—particularly women, children, and disabled individuals—by promoting sustainable livelihoods and addressing critical issues like education, health, water and sanitation, and environmental conservation.
At the heart of our work is a commitment to poverty alleviation through a bottom-up, participatory development approach. VOSD’s integrated programs cover a wide range of sectors, including non-formal education, microcredit for income generation, maternal and child health, and disaster preparedness and management. Over the years, we have implemented 16 long-term projects, providing essential services to over 10 million people, thanks to the efforts of our 9,577 dedicated staff and volunteers.
One of our key focuses is empowering women, who represent 95% of our program beneficiaries. Through skill development, capacity building, and access to microfinance, we provide women with the tools they need to gain financial independence and contribute to the socio-economic growth of their families and communities. To date, VOSD has helped form over 54,000 savings groups, with accumulated savings exceeding Tk. 236 million, which have been reinvested into income-generating activities such as agriculture, livestock, and handicrafts.
Our commitment to environmental sustainability is reflected in our widespread homestead gardening programs, social afforestation initiatives, and disaster resilience efforts. Through these initiatives, VOSD not only improves local food security but also promotes biodiversity and environmental conservation, planting millions of trees and reforesting large areas of vulnerable coastal land to protect against the increasing threats of climate change.
Furthermore, VOSD has taken a leading role in providing access to clean water and sanitation, implementing over 1,200 deep tube wells and more than 465,000 latrines in rural areas, significantly reducing waterborne diseases and improving public health. Our health and nutrition programs, which have reached over 12.7 million people, focus on maternal and child health, nutrition education, and family planning services, contributing to the overall well-being of communities.
Throughout the years, VOSD has been recognized for its outstanding contributions to social welfare, winning several prestigious national awards, including the Jainul Abedin Gold Award for Health & Nutrition and the National Youth Culture Organization Award for Education. With support from a diverse group of international donors and partnerships with organizations such as UNICEF, the World Bank, and Islamic Development Bank, VOSD continues to expand its reach, focusing on sustainable development, gender equality, and poverty reduction.
We believe that by working together, we can make significant strides towards alleviating poverty, improving health outcomes, and preserving the environment for future generations. Join us in this journey, and together, we can create lasting, positive change for those who need it most.
VOSD plans to continue expanding its reach by focusing on women's empowerment, poverty alleviation, and environmental sustainability. They also aim to increase agricultural production and contribute to reducing gender disparities.
At VOSD, we believe that educating communities is the foundation for sustainable development. Our initiatives empower individuals with the knowledge and resources to uplift their lives and protect their environment.
